A Delayed Special Day

As it turned out it was today
That special day I wrote about
A bit delayed; I had some doubt
But history today was made

The bills ensuring rights to vote
Approved by Senate Democrats
But sixty votes it did not have
Republicans we’re all opposed

Dems sought to change the rules within
To filibuster like before
Where one would have to hold the floor
And when he stops debate begins

The change proposed was just this time
The filibuster after that
Would then return to where ‘twas at
Of killing bills, a lawful crime

But this did not sway Sinema
Or Manchin to revise their stand
Their NO was felt throughout the land
They voted with Republicans

I find it difficult to ken
Their unabated loyalty
But not to our democracy
To filibuster rules instead

This places such a burden on
The Democrats in twenty two
To overcome state laws, all new
That make it hard and hard to win

But it is what we’ll have to do

A Special Day

I’m writing this the night before
A special day, the day the vote
Will happen on the Senate floor
Which will be of historic note

Perhaps, delayed yet one day more
But not beyond. This subject’s hot
What Democrats are fighting for
Republicans, they like it not

A vote to save our voting rights
Free, fair elections every state
Whose legislatures, with their might
Have rigged the outcomes for their slate

To pass these bills most readily
The filibuster need be changed
Permitting a majority
To be sufficient, simple, sane

What’s riding on tomorrow’s vote
The fate of our democracy
To slowly die or stay afloat
A test of its resiliency

Stand On Your Head

Stand on your head
And look at the world right side up
That is because
The world of politics is standing up side down
Domestic terrorists have now become
Just peaceful people protesting
With pepper spray and flag-pole clubs
A gallows built to lynch Mike Pence
To see him dangling up side down
He did the unforgivable
Obeyed his Constitution vow
Today, to be Republican you must embrace
Trump’s super lie
To wear truth garments inside out
The only way you’ll maintain clout
Your Trump allegiance not in doubt
Stand on your head
And watch democracy
Go slowly dead

One, Six, Twenty Two

So, what has changed all in a year?
The rank and file Republicans
Some fifty five percent believed
That Trump had won. That he achieved
A second term. Biden’s the man
Who stole the votes. Their “truth” held dear

It’s more than seventy percent
Republicans who now believe
That Biden lost, What does that say
About America today?
The lies they buy, the yarns they weave
That Trump is still their President

A year ago they staged a coup
As part of an extensive scheme
To overturn what Trump had lost
They’d win no matter what the cost
The Capital in force they breached
They did what they were told to do

So what, now, does our future hold?
Trumpublicans, fanatics who
Will use whatever’s in the books
To bring Trump back by hook or crook
Democracy be damned, their view
All heil to Trump who’s good as gold

We, Dems cannot stand idly by
Must organize, must build our strength
Must pass new laws, elections fair
The filibuster, must repair
Must fight the fight; must go the length
Or our democracy will die

Anyone’s Guess

Off again on again Senator Manchin
He circles round back to where he begins
First he is for it and then he’s ‘aggin’
It seems to depend upon what mood he’s in

Of course I’m referring to Biden’s big plan
His signature policy seemingly damned
By Manchin last Sunday when he took his stand
And said he’d vote no which would scuttle the plan

At first he’d approved Biden’s framework right out
And then indicated he’s having some doubts
But later assured Biden he was devout
On finding a way. It was what he’s about

So Manchin’s pronouncement that he would vote no
Was not well received by the other Big Joe
Nor by the House Dem. Progressives, although
They’d surely predicted that Manchin would blow

Even In Manchin’s home state, WV
Manchin was criticized saying that he
Had better rethink his position that be
Since that bill contains much of what the state needs

So Manchin is back at the table once more
Though tensions are higher than what was before
Off again on again, Joe to his core
It’s anyone’s guess as to what is in store

A Loyal Trump Supporter

A loyal Trump supporter, that I am
He makes me feel like really I belong
I wear the MAGA hat, like, all day long
I feel I’m special, cause he gives a damn

He wants to save us from the Democrats
Those dirty Dems. who stole election votes
But everybody knows Trump won; I note
He won it by a landslide! That’s a fact!

Those dirty Dems. are taking Trump to court
He cheated on his taxes, so they claim
But we know it’s a ruse; he’s not to blame
To wicked lengths the Democrats resort

So Trump needs money badly, that poor man
While he works so America won’t fail
The Dems. are trying to put him into jail
I’ll send him money, everything I can

It’s hard but it’s the least that I can do
I got some extra money COVID-wise
It helped a lot but Trump’s needs, I surmise
Trump those of mine and your’s as well, it’s true

A Lot We’ve Learned

A lot we’ve learned these past few days
Of things we had back then surmised
About the one-six insurrection
And Trumps willful dereliction
Of his job to quell the rise
Of violence which he could stay

We learned that months of preparation
For a coupe so Trump remains
As President no matter what
Mark Meadows, former Chief of Staff,
Was Trump’s go-fer to get it done
But failed. Ergo the insurrection

‘‘Twas hard for Trump to comprehend
That Governors, Republicans,
Though Trump supporters, he would note,
Refused to cheat in counting votes
Since first they were Americans
Trump’s means weren’t justified by ends

But this has changed. State legislatures
Have passed laws that give them clout
To change the vote-count operations
In red states throughout the nation
So, to toss the winner out
Republicans, reveal their nature

A lot we’ve learned these past few days
Trump’s quest to steal almost succeeded
But for loyal patriots
Who stood their ground which foiled his plot
But in three years, where things are headed
Trump will surely get his way

More Future

The Future?

Can you imagine Congress with Republicans in charge?
Just who will be the Speaker? Not McCarthy; not a chance!
My guess ‘twill be Jim Jordan. It’s his fortune written large
He’ll be the Chosen One by Trump in pomp and circumstance

And what will be, on Jim’s agenda, first? You get one guess.
You’re right: impeach Joe Biden then Pelosi – first things first
Then he’d dissolve the House committee under fake duress
That’s ferreting the truth about Trump’s coup attempt, his worst

It’s hard to see what else will be with G.O.P. control
But be advised what I’ve surmised, the future we’ll be in
It does appear this time next year according to the polls
Because of vote suppression that the G.O.P. will win

12/5/2021

Can you imagine January, twenty twenty five
With Trump declared the President no matter who had won?
That’s what will be, say those that see, that Congress won’t decide
To legislate before too late the filibuster gone

And so the legislatures G.O.P. among the states
Will all have laws to override the votes that will be cast
And they’ll choose Trump electors. Such will be the nation’s fate
So bid goodbye democracy; too bad it didn’t last

Once they, the G.O.P. and Trump are back in charge again
They’ll maintain power for terms to come; term limits gone as well
I do declare we’re heading there; our freedoms won’t remain
Unless we ACT ‘twill be a fact, our country’s gone to Hell

Tough Times

In real time we’re observing, witnessing the swift demise
Of liberty, democracy as we’ve known heretofore
The G.O.P. has gone full rogue, a Party in disguise
It now belongs to Donald Trump, full rotten to the core

Today we listened too to SCOTUS, oral arguments
On Roe v. Wade, a woman’s right, the liberty to choose
To birth a child or to abort; what Roe v. Wade defends
The Trump appointed justices, true justice they’ll refuse

Their real intentions they made clear, just how each will decide
There’s fifty years of precedence supporting Roe v. Wade
Which they will override though nothing justifies their side
The only change is politics that drives decisions made

Not only will this devastate those women so in need
It will destroy the SCOTUS as Supreme Court of the land
Decisions won’t be trusted, since to politics they heed
A blow to our democracy which maybe can’t withstand

Meanwhile we Democrats are paralyzed; we’ve lost our clout
We can’t pass legislation to preserve our basic rights
The filibuster cuts us down; nor can we vote it out
In real time we’re observing, witnessing our own demise
