Elizabeth Wilkerson wrote the book, Caste
Of all of the volumes I’ve read in the past
This one tops the list in importance, I feel
I learned many things unaware they were real
The author, a black, taught how caste permeates
Our essence of being, our innermost state
It thrives on adversity upper o’er lower
No matter achievements, we’re better than they are
The book windows slavery, for four hundred years
Inhuman brutalities, lives lived in fear
Though Lincoln had freed them; our costliest war,
The South re-enslaved them, worse off than before
Where lynching a nigger was great entertainment
Large crowds would all gather to watch his denouement
And lynch-picture postcards were made there and then
And sold to the crowd to recall what they’d seen
The book compares caste systems, Indian with ours
And Arians o’er Jews as the Nazis gained power
They have much in common, one must feel superior
Above those less human, innately inferior
Perhaps the most relevant to the now, here
Is caste’s role in politics throughout the years
Republican whites know that they’re upper caste
All others beneath them with blacks being last
But in twenty-forty-two whites then will be
In the minority; that’s bad, you see!
Must outlaw abortions; make black births decrease
And limit their access to vote as they please
White caste’s been in power for nearly four centuries
Keeping that power trumps even democracy
Attitudes held by most right-wing Republicans
Fraudulence claimed, never ceding elections
Wilkerson’s book is like one in a million
Her writing, her insights are not short of brilliant
I thank her sincerely for all she has done
Revealing caste’s shadows within everyone

A Bone To Pick
A bone to pick I have with commentators
Those talking heads who give their views on news
The label they confer on proclaimed haters
On haters of all democrats and RINOs too
Conservatives, they’re labeled, way far right
So tell me, what’s conservative in what they preach?
They want to strip away all women’s rights
Remove entitlements; it’s what they seek
It used to be Conservatives conserved
Where recent history served as precedent
The way things are, they wanted to preserve
Today Conservatives appear hell bent
On just conserving power for themselves
Ignore the law; Ignore the Constitution
Toward people problems, put them on the shelf
Toward Democrats, revenge and retribution
So commentators, please stop labeling
These radicals as though respectable
Conservatives. It’s them enabling –
Continuing to act in ways despicable.

State of the Union
Joe Biden said our Union’s strong
His speech as powerful as long
Describing his accomplishments
Unique o’er prior presidents
In atmospheres political
Where jointness was inimical
Great bills he passed bipartisan
Politically an artisan
It’s clear the country’s better off
A President who plays no golf
Nor lies, nor wallows in corruption
He runs a government that functions
So why are Biden’s ratings low?
The populous cares not to know
They. mostly get their news from Fox
Or have their head stuck in a box
I hope the populous tuned in
And learned the shape the country’s in
Is better than before by far
Because of Biden, here we are

Clear and Present Danger
A pyrrhic victory McCarthy won
Took fifteen rounds once voting had begun
And, yes, he gave his power all away
Behoved to extremists come what may
Not just emasculate his Speakership
Commitments made he secretly, to wit
Concerning funding government and debts
Such bills up for a vote, he would not let
The ceiling on our debt will soon be reached
Just days away, although funds can be stretched
‘Till early June, Sec. Treas. J. Yellon said
Beyond then U.S. credit will be dead
And interest will soar, employment dive
Financial pain and hardship to survive
A worldwide deep recession and much more
Inflation like we’ve rarely seen before
The Dems. with some Republicans on board
Can try to out flank Kevin and his horde
Discharging a petition so a bill
Can reach the floor for voting, if they will
McCarthy and extreme Republicans
Are not just plain and simple charlatans
A clear and present danger, that they be
To all of us and to democracy

Pyrrhic Victory
McCarthy’s chance as Speaker now seems slim
A dozen Reps. said they won’t vote for him
It takes two eighteen votes for him to win
But no one else has tossed his name there in
What happens if a Speaker’s not elected?
We learned from Rachel Maddow what’s expected
Without a Speaker no one gets sworn in
No business by the House proceeds within
It’s been a hundred years since this occurred
For two whole months House business was deferred
Consider what would happen sans a Speaker
Defaults on debt; gov. funding in the freezer
My guess is that McCarthy will cave in
And promise radicals their every whim
In order that The Speaker he’d become
A Pyrrhic victory he will have won

The New Year
The year that was, gross politics galore
From Justices who Iie – to insurrection
But Democrats did win throughout the nation
Now Donald Trump’s
Back on the stump
Though twice impeached
Won’t buy defeat
I wonder what the New Year has in store
Unique among events there on the Hill
The January-Six select committee
A monumental job they have completed
They showed throughout
Without a doubt
Trump’s many lies
His multi-tries
To stay in place despite the voters’ will
For sure ex-Pres. Don Trump will be indicted
On many counts both federal and some states
The D.O.J. can’t look the other way
The evidence
Plus precedent
Just won’t allow
Ignoring now
That’s not to say that he will be convicted
The New Year finds the G.O.P. a mess
With such a very slim majority
McCarthy’s number one priority
Is being Speaker
Long time seeker
He’ll likely win
By caving in
The Party’s future one can only guess
One thing I do expect this coming year
When House control becomes Republican
They’ll gorge themselves on hearings ‘cause they can
In retribution
Sans solutions
Done in haste
A total waste
And little legislation will appear
To all of you, my readers dear
I wish a happy, fruitful year

Kevin
So, Kevin as Speaker, it’s what I desire
House Speaker McCarthy, someone to admire
For many a year to that post I’ve aspired
And now is my time, though my chances seem dire
The problem, you know, is: the Democrats won
Two-thirteen House seats when vote-counting was done
Leaving two-twenty-two that Republicans won
Getting two-eighteen votes won’t be easy or fun
So, whatever my caucus desires, I’ll agree
So what, if it’s touting false conspiracies
And impeaching whom the real powers that be
Decide to impeach. I’ll agree; you will see
I’ll be second in line for the presidency
I don’t know, happenstance, what the future might be
There’s a lot of unrest, brewing conspiracies
Now, POTUS McCarthy- that sounds great to me!

Sedition
Another day of history, today
Of victory within the DOJ
Who won a very difficult conviction
Against those charged with criminal sedition
01 06 21, that was the date
The Capital was stormed, a pre-planned fate
Oath Keepers tried to alter the election
They, now, will face long years of jail correction
The verdicts in this case have implications
Well beyond the Keeper’s situation
It labels what took place not as a riot
But as a deep, premeditated plot
To overthrow by force democracy
To whit sedition, a conspiracy
It also signals those who would conspire
Sedition, consequences very dire

Ruminations
Thanksgiving season gives me time to contemplate
On fundamental natures, we as humans –
Thankfulness for all that we appreciated
Thanking those that thus participated
People, animals and plants
And, ultimately, God
It is our deep necessity
Reflecting life’s uncertainties
To cling to something absolute
That we believe infallible
A person, book or deity
It’s through such faith that we gain strength
To deal with life’s vicissitudes
Faith is our path to God
But where there’s faith there’s also doubt
If people like us don’t agree
And worship not our deity
They must convert or force them out
Else gone infallibility
Pack animals we are like wolves
We either lead or we are led
Just who and how a leader’s picked
This is the field of politics
Depending who is in our pack
They’re either like us or they aren’t
Our pack is broad or it is not
We either tolerate or not
The arc of human history
Increasing pack diversity

Post Election Day
As some folks say, the ones who know about these things
It ain’t all over, not until the fat lady sings
But I’ll tell you, that red tsunami that Republicans predicted
Turned out to be a pinkish drizzle unexpected
Just who’ll control the Senate and the House
Blue stays the Senate; there I’ve got but little doubt
The House just slightly red with Kevin as its Speaker
But counting’s incomplete. Some races really squeakers
But one thing now we truthfully can say
Autocracy’s defeated, Democracy held sway
