I Beg Your Pardon

The President’s pardon of old Sheriff Joe
Really served as a signal to Trump’s coterie
That were they indicted by Bob Mueller’s probe
He’d issue a pardon to set them each free

This struck at the heart of the investigations
Each witness could perjure with no consequence
Nor could they flip suspects to yield in narration
True witness accounts of what really took place

But Mueller, as usual, ahead of the game
Joined forces with Schneiderman, AG New York
To prosecute Manafort’s crimes where there’s blame
As crimes against state; federal pardons won’t work

In the news ‘twas revealed that Trump’s real-estate moguls
All during Trump’s campaign for Presidency
Were proposing to build a Trump-Tower in Moscow
While denying the same most emphatically

This may be the secret that Trump has been hiding
It’s part of the story, but I think there’s more
The Christian Steele dossier interest abiding
Makes me anticipate more is in store

August Twenty Nine

In yesterday’s poem I exaggerated
The lineal measure of rain that descended
As hurricane Harvey with rain inundated
The city of Houston with thousands upended

Twenty odd inches, not feet was the measure
A total of fifty by this time tomorrow
Thousands of people lost all that they treasure
And seven fatalities: grief and much sorrow

Our President came to assess all the damage
He came not to Houston but to Corpus Christi
Where Harvey appeared to have been on a rampage
Just seeing the photos has made my eyes misty

Where Trump chose his photo-op, Trump-style lecture
He said that the government will supply aid
The help he can muster is purely conjecture
Since so few appointments of staff have been made

He neither got rained on nor waded the waters
He spoke not to victims nor to the bereaved
His handling this crisis, he said it would alter
And become the model of what to achieve

Again, Trump embodied his utter irrelevance
People are hurting, they’ve lost everything
Their future uncertain, their present like in a trance
A true sense of hope, Trump’s unable to bring

Harvey

So much that’s political in today’s news
New stories on Donald’s involvements with Putin
Evidence more of his campaign colluding
More justifications where there’s no excuse

Be those as they may, not our subject today
We turn instead to the dire flooding in Houston
It’s already epic in scope and destruction
Rescues by the thousands have been under way

Some twenty odd feet of rain so far has fallen
With twenty odd feet of rain more on the way
Thousands in shelters, they’ll be there for days
Homes lost and businesses, outlooks appalling

Hurricane Harvey will cost many billions
And years of recovery. It stands to reason,
Since it is still early in hurricane season,
That climate-change costs could run into the zillions

Wake up Mr. Trump and wake up you deniers
‘Twill only get worse as each year comes about
More severe hurricanes and more heat scorching droughts
The world needs true leadership, take off your blinders!

Misplaced Pardons

Down deeper let’s look at the pardoning of Joe
Just what does it do to the Justice we know?
Just how does it weaken Trump probes now in progress
And undermine centuries old jurisprudence?

Trump’s act mocks our standing: a nation of laws
It overrides witnesses, judges and all
Done to politically payback Arpaio
For early support disregarding his bio

Now Manafort, Kushner and Flynn needn’t worry
About being flipped for their unbridled stories
Of what really happened ‘tween Trump and the Russians
No clemency needed with Trump pardons trumping

To pardon a convict for favors political
Or for suppression is highly inimical
To founding principles on which we’ve flourished
A nation of justice and laws that we cherish

Old Sheriff Joe

I do beg your pardon said old Sheriff Joe
I’d just done my duty the best that I know
And swept all those scumbags right off of the streets
Of Maricopa County which has been my beat

I’d been County Sheriff for twenty three years
My people all loved me, my rallies they cheered
I had enough backing to do what I want
No judge’s going to tell me I can or I can’t

I’ve been in the Army, I’ve worked DEA
I’ve sold rocket rides into near outer space
A radio station, KJOE, my creation
And thousands of times on TV o’er the nation

I know there’ve been judgments by courts against me
They’re softer on convicts than I like to be
I put them in tents in our blistering heat
For prisoners like these all my actions were meet

They claim we neglected sex crimes against children
Hell, most of those cases were cleared by exception
Although no convictions on those were extant
You see they were children of false immigrants

Now I’ve been convicted of contempt of court
And, yes, I’m contemptuous, they come up short
It is a conspiracy leveled at me
But then that’s okay since I knew I’d be freed

‘Cause I was for Trump really right from the start
We both knew Obama was false to his heart
I supported Trump’s bid for the Presidency
And I let the world know most vociferously

So now that my friend rightly gave me a pardon
I expect criticism against him will harden
But I’m in his corner; I have him to thank
Together we’ll rid us of bad immigrants

More Trump Limericks

Donald Trump would a dictator be
If he lived in some other country
But he’s Pres. of the US
Has to stomach a free press
And he can’t legislate by decree

Donald labels reporters as liars
When of Donald’s gross lies they aren’t buyers
He creates these false bubbles
Which gets him in trouble
But his base sings his praises much higher

Donald’s having to deal with his past
Facts on Russia keep coming in fast
‘Though he’s tried to curtail them
Revelations assail him
O’er his future dark shadows are cast

Dossier

It’s becoming increasingly clear
To observers of Trump far and near
Amid mounting evidence
The now White House resident
May be out by the end of the year

All because of that Steele dossier
Testimony by Simpson all day
To the Senate committee
On the doc’s nitty gritty
What the dossier really did say

Russia has damning evidence on Trump
Has colluded with Trump on the stump
Helped to get him elected
In return they expected
Trump to jump when they told him to jump

As the noose tightens ‘round Donald’s neck
He’s becoming a wild nervous wreck
At his Party he lashes
And the media he trashes
It will worsen is what to expect

8/23/17

Forty Six

I may be early by some months to go
In hailing our new number Forty Six
Since Trump has so behaved to seal his fate
What now remains is waiting for the date
When Trump resigns ‘mid charges that do stick
And Michael Pence as POTUS will be so

The dossier compiled by Christian Steele
Though unconfirmed in its entirety
Is proving more and more to be correct
And more there is; we ain’t seen nothing yet
Trump telegraphs his guilt with clarity
Obstructing justice with misplaced appeals

Mike Pence as President, what to expect
Him reassuring Allies we’re aligned
On foreign policy no change in sight
Domestically align almost far right
And acting Presidential all the time
Compared to Trump most boring, his prospect

8/22/17

Eclipse

Just what will be remembered of today
The day the shadow of the Moon traversed the Earth
The day that Trump announced the Afghan war’s rebirth
The day in Boston thousands marched protesting hate

Trump’s venue was Fort Myers where he spoke
In contrast with his speech the prior week
Americans of every color, creed
All join defending us against our foes

Regarding Trump’s Afghani policy
His new approach to winning of that war
A copy of Obama’s from before
With minor changes, far as I could see

He’ll, maybe, have some thirteen thousand troops
To do the job a hundred thousand couldn’t
He’ll train their troops to fight as past they wouldn’t
There’s no there there, our people won’t be duped

One thing was new regarding Pakistan
Insulting them; they were uncivilized
And courting India, Trump hasn’t realized
They’re enemies, a fragile truce extant

Reading the teleprompter made Trump feel
All Presidential, looking almost real
Tuesday’s Phoenix rally will reveal
True Trump in all his xenophobic zeal

8/21/17

Watch-Signs

It’s called “unrest” in many venues
A euphemism used for violence
Actions that we find abhorrent
Like Trump’s recent visceral torrent
Nazis marching, Nazi parlance
Trump supporting, they’ll continue

Watch-signs of a deeper problem

Society’s accelerating
Change is charging every day
Faster than our ways evolve
Problems we can not resolve
Cannot trust what leaders say
All in all debilitating

Watch-signs of a deeper problem

Technology has pushed the nations
Of the world toward integration
Fostering globalization
We’re also of the realization
Forces strong throughout the nation
Now oppose globalization

Watch-signs of a deeper problem

There’s no road back to what’s before
We cannot stand where once we stood
We see in Trump’s ascendancy
A festering malignancy
Within society which could
Precipitate a civil war

Watch-signs of a deeper problem
