Pain’s Gains

We’ve learned one thing from history, great pain can birth great gain:
It took two wars to formulate a stabilized EU
For Israel, the genocide of European Jews
Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffered by Japan
Korea, Nam, Cambodia, the blood of millions ran
Now, by and large, prosperity and peace throughout obtain

It doesn’t always work that way, the pain can make things worse
The pain can be a wake-up call that goes unrecognized
Or is ignored by those who see their own goals realized
And, too, the special-interest sources handing out their wealth
In spite of damage to the nation’s fundamental health
While citizens decrying pain don’t act toward its reverse

We’ve had a wake-up call with Trump, to heed or to ignore
He’s trampled on the Constitution with his business deals
He’s trashed our institutions, tweeting tweets that are unreal
He’s populated government with those unfit to serve”
He falls for false conspiracies believing every word
And issues orders cancelling protections from before

There is much more, I’ve said before, the damage Trump has done
From sucking up to Russia to ignoring Intel’s say
Republicans meanwhile appease; by them it’s all okay
As long as Trump will blindly sign their right-wing legislation
No matter how it’s painful to most people of the nation
And forty million people still believe that Trump’s The One

The opportunity is rife to transform pain to gain
To join the march to stymie Trump in all his machinations
To win the House and Senate in the two-eighteen elections
To not sit back and let the others do the heavy lifting
To be involved to where the sands of politics are shifting
To run for office, knock on doors; it’s time to win again
